How to Get Rid of Bad Smells

Bad-Smells

There are many smells that we as humans just don’t find pleasant. Indeed, some are downright stomach churning. Think dirty diapers, rotten eggs, and stinky shoes as examples. Then there are other smells, such as roses, fresh cut grass, and coffee, which are much more pleasing to our senses. The truth of the matter is that smells, good and bad, are a part of life.

Unfortunately, we cannot always have the good scents, and bad smells are typically there to let us know that something is not right. Take food for example. When it smells bad, it usually tastes bad and so we know not to eat it. That being said, we don’t usually want bad smells lingering around our houses, so how do we get rid of those nasty odors? The following will give you some ideas of how to deal with bad smells in the home.

Stinky Shoes

Shoes, particularly those in which the feet sweat more such as sneakers, can smell bad if they are worn too regularly. This is because when the feet sweat, bacteria can build up in the dark, moist environment. These bacteria emit a foul smell after a while. To tackle this, the experts at ShoeFresh recommend using a shoe odor spray that can eliminate odors for up to three months.

Trashcans

The trashcan might start to smell if you put food waste in it, for example. Even if you dispose of food waste separately from your trash can, you might find that it smells bad if you are putting food wrappers in the trash. You can prevent odors by using baking soda or a specially purchased deodorizing pack. It is a good idea to empty your trash can regularly and give it a clean with a disinfectant at least once a week.

Refrigerator

Your refrigerator might smell bad if you are storing particularly pungent foods in it or if there is a spillage that you did not notice. If you have strong smelling foods in the fridge, such as blue cheese, try double wrapping it and make sure that any leftovers are placed in an airtight container. Strong smells can be minimized by placing a container or baking soda in the fridge. Change this whenever you notice your fridge starting to smell. If you cannot find the source of the smell, it would be worth giving the refrigerator a thorough clean. Take everything out and use a disinfectant solution to wipe down all the shelves and sides.

Dog Beds

No matter how often you brush your dog or take them to visit the groomers, there will be times when they are just smelly, especially if they have been out in the rain. The main cause of a smelly dog is a yeast or a bacterial infection inside their ears or on their skin. The good news is that there are oils and drops that can help with this.

However, if your dog smells bad then the chances are their bed does too. It is best to have two beds for the dog so that when one is being washed, you have another available. You can wash the dog bed in the machine but make sure you buy special powder designed to break down the hairs so as not to clog the machine. You should do this once a week. You can also shake baking soda on the dog’s bed and leave it for an hour or two before vacuuming it off. This should help to absorb and eliminate odors. You might even find a vet-approved pet deodorizing spray for the dog’s bed that will help to keep it fresh.
